I've just won the 2011 Cumbria Wildlife Trust Xmas card competition with this image of a Waxwing.

Ulverston claimed the first trophy of the season in the Barrow and District League. Ulverston managed to beat Dalton 22-13 in the Frank Reid cup final at Holbeck Park.

Borrowdale Valley

I've just got back from a weekend in the Lake District. I stayed in a cottage about 200mtrs from Ashness Bridge, needless to say I took my camera. The weather was kind and I managed a few Landscapes, will post on my web-site soon.

Barton Townley Final 2011 - Ulverston v Dalton

I went to watch the Barton Townley Final at Craven. Ulverston were beaten finalists last year, by Barrow Island, but managed to win the final this year against Dalton in a close fought game. Dalton lead at half time but Ulverston managed to win 32-20 with a superb second half display.

Barrow Raiders v Batley Bulldogs

Another defeat for the Raiders but I managed a few decent photos. Light was bad in the first half trying to shoot into the sun, the second half was far easier with the sun from behind. The Pentax K5 is a definite improvement over the K7.
I'm trying out the TAV mode on the K5 for the rugby. I use the Pentax DA* 300mm lens at F4 and set the shutter speed to 1/800th sec. with the ISO between 100-3200 and seem to be getting some fair results.
The AF speed is also better on K5 with the 5 spot focussing being very good for the rugby.

Sigma EM 140 DG Macro Flash

I've just invested in a ring flash to use with my Pentax DA F 100mm Macro lens. First impressions are very good, I think it will take some practice but I'm sure it's going to help me get a few more insect shots this summer.
I know it is better to use a tripod for macro but I find this very restrictive and would rather be on the move. I've had a few practice shots and found setting the camera to x-sync (1/180th sec) and using manual focus with the lens set between F8-F16 at ISO100 gets pretty good results.

Devoke Water and Wastwater

Wast water

The weather was unbelievable, for October, this weekend so me and Maire decided to go for a walk around Nether Wasdale. We stopped off at Devoke Water on the way.

The weather was too good for photography, not a cloud in the sky, that doesn't add any atmosphere to photos I'll have to return to Wast Water it must be the most photographed Lake in England, I can understand why.

Leighton Moss and Warton Crag

I recently had a trip to Leighton Moss, I managed to get a few photos of the Greenshanks, Redshanks and Little Egrets feeding in front of the Eric Morcambe hide.
When it got too busy I decided to have a look around Warton Crag. I was glad I did, I sat and watched a female Kestrel hunting grasshoppers for about an hour.

The next day was Barrow Raiders v Sheffield Eagles at Craven Park, sadly Raiders lost so that will be the last home game for a while, I did manage to get published in Rugby League Express again.

Silverband Falconry

Sorry I haven't posted for a while but I've been too busy taking and processing photos.
At the start of the month I attended a photography day with Ann and Steve Toon at Silverband Falconry centre near Penrith, it really is a fantastic day out, very relaxed and informal with plenty of oppertunities to get great photos of the Birds of Prey.

Dipper

Thought I go and see if the Dippers were still around.
As you can see they were, I still haven't managed to get the sort of shot I'm after though, this was the best.

The river was higher than I expected today so I found a place where I thought the water was slow enough for the dippers to feed and waited. After about an hour one turned up but didn't hang around for long, a bonus Kingfisher did show but was too distant to get a photo.

Barrow Island v Ulverston RL, Barton Townley Cup

I went to watch Ulverston Rugby League play Barrow Island in the Barton Townley cup on Wednesday and took the camera along. Light was perfect and it was a good game with Ulverston winning the game 28-26. Barrow Island missed a conversion, in the last kick of the game, that would have took it to extra time.

Hoad Monument and Fireworks

I thought I try to get some photos of the fireworks display for the re-opening of the Sir John Barrow(Hoad) monument on Sunday 22nd. It's the first time I'd tried photographing fireworks and only had about 5mins to get the photos in so it was a bit of fingers crossed. I did manage to get a few keepers.

I tried exposure of 4secs and 8secs at F8 and found I got the best results at 8secs.

I got my best shots at the start of the display as there was too much smoke in the second half of the display.

Rusland Show Hound Trails

I decided to have another try at getting some action shots from the hound trails at the Rusland show. I tried a different tactic and let the camera auto-focus at hounds jumping a fence. I think manual focus is probably a better option, pre-focus on the fence and fire off 3 shots at 5fps as soon as the dog enters the view finder, I seem to get more keepers using this method.

Keswick for a week

I've just come home from a weeks holiday at Keswick. I can't believe it's the first time I've visited Keswick living as close as I do, but I've just drove right through previously.
It really is a nice place to stay on being central for a lot of walks and with plenty of places to eat and drink after a hard days walking.
The weather wasn't too bad and I did manage to get a few shots for my portfolio.
Tuesday morning I was out of bed at 5:30am to try and get a shot of the iconic Ullswater boathouse, the weather was kind and I did get a few keepers.
I think my favourite shot is of a tree on the banks of Buttermere this was taken quite late in the morning in bright light and shooting into the sun which isn't normally advised but I think it worked this time.
I got toothache on the Tuesday so that put a spanner in the works for a couple of days

Holker Carriage Driving Trials & Barrow Raiders v Keighley

Saturday was a busy day, I decided to cover the Carriage Driving Trials at Holker Hall then go on to the Barrow v Keighley game.
It was the first time I'd been to Carriage Driving Trials so was a bit of a learning exercise. I could get close enough to manage with my Sigma 70-200mm F2.8, the conditions were good and I managed to get a few shots for my web-site www.srmillerphotography.co.uk/Sport.html

After the Carriage Trials it was home for tea then off to the Barrow v Keighley game for the 6:30 KO. Again conditions were good so I got a few shots with the Pentax DA* 300mm before changing to the Sigma 70-200mm.
The Pentax 300mm can struggle to focus in bad light probably because it's F4, the F2.8 Sigma is considerably faster.
I was happy to have one of my photos published in Rugby League Express, this was taken with the Pentax 300mm early on when the light was good.

It turned out to be an easy win for Barrow on the day, 36-0 up at half time and going on to win 54-0.

Cartmel Show

I had a few days off from work last week so decided to go to the Cartmel show.
Weather wasn't good at first but brightenend up as the day went on.
I decided to travel light so gave my Pentax 50-200mm WR lens a run out, I must admit I'm quite impressed by this lens. For less than £120 you can get really good results as long as you stop it down a bit.
